Anthropicβs Sonnet 5: Powerful AI Agents at a Lower Price Point

Anthropic has launched Sonnet 5, its most agentic Sonnet model yet, bringing stronger coding and reasoning abilities while expanding advanced AI actions to a lower-cost tier.
Anthropic unveiled Sonnet 5, a major upgrade to its mid-tier AI model lineup. The model delivers better agentic coding, reasoning, and knowledge work performance, while allowing users to run longer tasks through browsers and terminals. The release comes shortly before U.S. export controls on Mythos 5 and Fable 5 were lifted.
β’ Sonnet 5 shows significant improvements in coding, reasoning, and knowledge work, with some capabilities exceeding Opus 4.8.
β’ The model can operate a browser and terminal, handle longer-running tasks, and bring more advanced agent behavior to Anthropicβs more affordable model tier.
β’ While performance improved overall, its cybersecurity benchmark results are weaker than Sonnet 4.6. Anthropic said it did not specifically train the model for cybersecurity tasks. Sonnet 5 is available across all plans with introductory API pricing until August 31.
This launch strengthens Anthropicβs AI lineup and makes more advanced agent capabilities available at a lower cost. However, expectations around Fable 5 remain high, making Sonnet 5 feel less impactful to some users despite its upgrades.

Anthropic launched Claude Science, a new AI workspace for researchers, while also starting its own drug discovery program focused on neglected diseases.
Anthropic has introduced Claude Science, a research platform that brings together paper reviews, scientific databases, figure creation, and computing tools in one place.
Claude Science connects every step of the research process, creating a clear and auditable record that helps researchers track work and verify findings.
The platform integrates 60+ scientific tools and data sources covering genetics, proteins, chemistry, and cell biology, reducing the need to switch between multiple databases.
Available on macOS and Linux paid plans, the platform also allows sensitive research data to remain on a lab's own systems instead of being stored in the cloud.
This marks a major shift for Anthropic into the scientific research space. With its growing Life Sciences efforts, the launch of Claude Science, the hiring of leading experts such as John Jumper, and its new drug discovery initiative, the company is positioning itself as a serious player in AI-powered scientific research and discovery.
