Pope Warns: AI Must Never Control Humanity

Pope Leo XIV warned that AI must serve people, not control them, in his first major Church message on technology.
Pope Leo XIV released Magnifica Humanitas, his first encyclical to the Churchβs 1.4 billion members, focusing on the growing power of artificial intelligence.
The Pope said AI is driven by private global companies that already have more power than many governments, and warned that the technology is never truly neutral.
He called for AI to become more human friendly, free from monopolies, and warned that people could become trapped in systems focused only on efficiency.
Leo demanded strong laws, independent oversight, informed users, and responsible political leadership. He also said deadly military decisions should never be left to AI, adding that βno algorithm can make war morally acceptable.β
This is a major signal that the Catholic Church sees AI as one of the defining issues of our time. The Pope compared it to the Industrial Revolution and stressed the need for safety, ethics, and human control before AI grows too powerful.

Uber Says More AI Spending Isnβt Leading to Better Results

Uber says rising AI costs are getting harder to justify as more AI usage is not always leading to better results.
Uber COO Andrew Macdonald said the company is struggling to connect higher AI spending with real improvements in consumer features. He explained that using more AI tokens does not always mean building better products, making the growing costs harder to defend.
Macdonald said Uber cannot clearly link higher AI activity to shipping more useful features for users.
Uber has slowed hiring to help fund its growing AI investments, increasing concerns about spending efficiency.
He also called autonomous driving βexistentialβ for Uber, saying it is important for the companyβs future but still not close to full adoption.
This shows that some companies are starting to question whether massive AI spending is truly delivering strong business results. While many firms are pushing employees to use more AI tools, companies like Uber and Duolingo are beginning to focus more on real impact instead of just AI usage numbers.
